Statement from the Chicago City Council Latino Caucus on the Murder of Two Jewish People in Washington, D.C.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 22, 2025
CHICAGO – The Chicago Latino Caucus is heartbroken and outraged by the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of two Israeli Embassy staff members, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., on May 21, 2025.
We unequivocally condemn this heinous act of violence and stand in solidarity with our Jewish siblings and the broader Jewish community during this time of profound grief. The loss of Yaron and Sarah, a young couple dedicated to diplomacy and peace, is a devastating reminder of the destructive power of hatred.
The suspect, Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old from Chicago, has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting. This act of violence does not reflect the values of any community rooted in justice and humanity. We reject all forms of hate and violence, no matter who commits them.
As representatives of Chicago's diverse Latino community, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering unity, understanding, and respect among all communities. We must work together to combat antisemitism and all forms of bigotry that threaten the fabric of our society.
The City Council Latino Caucus includes 15 members from across the city. They represent wards as diverse as Chicago itself. Signing onto this letter, in addition to Chair Andre Vasquez (40) and Vice-Chair Ruth Cruz (30), are: Ald. Daniel La Spata (1), Ald. Peter Chico (10), Ald. Julia Ramirez (12), Ald. Jeylú Gutiérrez (14), Ald. Michael D. Rodriguez (22), Ald. Bryon Sigcho-Lopez (25), Ald. Jessie Fuentes (26), Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez (33), Ald. Anthony Quezada (35), and Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36). Chicago’s Clerk Anna Valencia is an ex-officio member of the Latino Caucus and Latino Caucus Foundation.
